01 How long does driving training take?
One of the most common questions from first-time learners: how many days will I actually need before I am ready to drive independently and apply for a permanent licence?
At T.K. Singh Motor Driving Training School, a complete training programme runs 26 to 45 sessions depending on the plan you choose. In practice, most learners become competent within 30 sessions — which at 2 sessions per day across weekdays takes roughly 15–18 days of actual on-road time.
What affects how quickly you learn?
The two biggest factors are your prior exposure (have you sat in the driver's seat before, even briefly?) and how many sessions you complete per week. We offer morning, afternoon, and evening slots — students who take 5–6 sessions per week typically feel road-confident within 3 weeks.

02 Getting your LMV licence in West Bengal — step by step
West Bengal follows a two-stage licence process under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. Here is every step you will need to complete.
Minimum age: 18 years (LMV). Apply via the Sarathi portal at parivahan.gov.in or visit the Alipurduar RTO. Submit Form 1 (application), Form 2 (medical), Aadhaar/address proof, and one passport photo. Pay the LL fee online.
A 20-question multiple choice test on road signs, traffic rules, and safe driving. Minimum pass mark: 12/20. The test is taken on a computer at the RTO office. Our theory classes prepare you fully for this test.
The mandatory waiting period between your LL date and Permanent Licence application is 30 days. Use this time for structured on-road training with an RTO-approved school. We issue a formal Training Completion Certificate at the end of your programme.
Apply through the Sarathi portal for your Driving Licence appointment. Bring all documents (see section 4), your LL, training certificate, and fee. The RTO inspector will conduct a short practical driving test.
The practical test at the RTO is usually 5–10 minutes of driving on a test ground or road. Students who train with us pass at a high rate on the first attempt. Your DL is issued by post within 7–10 working days of passing.
03 Cracking the RTO driving test — what to expect
Many learners are more nervous about the RTO test than about actual driving. The good news: if you have completed structured training, the test is straightforward. Here is what actually happens at the Alipurduar RTO.
The Learner's Licence (LL) theory test
This is a computer-based test conducted at the RTO. 20 questions, 20 minutes. Topics covered: traffic signs and signals (biggest section), road rules, safe driving practices, and first aid basics. Our theory class covers all official questions and patterns used in West Bengal. Students typically score 16–20/20 after one session.
The Permanent Licence practical test
An RTO inspector observes you drive for a short distance — usually 200–500 metres in and around the RTO compound. Key things the inspector looks for:
- Proper use of clutch, brake, and accelerator — no stalling or jerking
- Checking mirrors before reversing and turning
- Correct hand signals or indicator use
- Ability to stop within a reasonable distance
- No panic, no sudden moves

05 Driving on hill roads — North Bengal specifics
Jaigaon is at the foothills of the Himalayas. If you plan to drive in Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Sikkim, or even the local Hasimara ghat roads, flat-road training alone is not enough. Hill road driving is a genuinely different skill.
What makes hill driving different
- Hill starts: Starting from a slope without rolling back is the first skill to master. It involves balancing the clutch at the biting point, applying the handbrake, then releasing as you accelerate.
- Engine braking: On long descents, riding the brake overheats the discs. Experienced hill drivers use a lower gear to let the engine slow the vehicle naturally.
- Blind hairpin corners: You must slow dramatically before blind corners, stay in your lane, and use the horn (legally required on Himalayan roads to signal your presence).
- Right of way: On single-lane hill roads, the vehicle going uphill has right of way — the descending vehicle reverses to a wider point to let it pass.
- Fog and low visibility: Common in foothills between October and February. Use low-beam headlights plus fog lights if fitted. Never use high beam in fog.
06 Women's batch programme — safe, separate, structured
T.K. Singh Motor Driving Training School runs dedicated women-only training batches. These are completely separate sessions — no male students share the vehicle. The programme was launched in 2018 to address the discomfort many women felt in mixed-gender training environments.
How the women's batch works
- Separate sessions: Women students drive in their own scheduled time slots, completely separate from male students across all batches.
- No male co-students: Only the female student and the certified male instructor are in the car during training. This is a strict policy, not an exception.
- Night sessions: For evening and night driving sessions, one family member (husband, brother, or parent) is welcome to sit in the rear seat if the student prefers this for additional comfort.
- Same curriculum: Women's batch students follow the same full curriculum as any other batch — same number of sessions, same RTO test preparation, same certificate on completion.
- All plans available: Essentials, Complete + Licence, and Premium Elite are all offered for women's batch students.
07 Driving school vs. learning from family — which is better?
This is an honest question and deserves an honest answer. Learning to drive from a parent or relative is very common in India — and many people do get a licence that way. But there are real advantages to structured professional training, especially for the first 4–6 weeks.

The Training Completion Certificate point is often overlooked: to apply for your Permanent Licence in West Bengal, you need a certificate from an RTO-approved school. If you learned only from family, you still need to enrol at an approved school — at minimum — to get the certificate.
08 Night driving — what to expect and how to prepare
Night driving introduces a genuinely different set of challenges. Reduced visibility, headlight glare from oncoming vehicles, and a smaller margin for error make it a distinct skill. Many new drivers who are perfectly comfortable in daylight feel uneasy at night.
Key differences at night
- Peripheral vision drops: Human vision in low light is significantly reduced at the edges. You are more dependent on headlights and road markings.
- Glare from oncoming vehicles: Look at the left edge of the road rather than directly at approaching headlights to maintain your lane reference without being blinded.
- Pedestrians and animals: Harder to spot at night — especially people in dark clothing on unlit roads. Maintain a lower speed than you would in daylight at the same location.
- Fatigue: Night driving is mentally tiring. If you feel drowsy, pull over safely — do not push on.

Yes. T.K. Singh Motor Driving Training School holds three government certifications: RTO Approved under CMVR 1989 (Govt. of India), MSME Certified (Ministry of MSME, Govt. of India), and Certificate of Enlistment (Govt. of West Bengal).
Minimum 1 month. The 30-day attendance is counted from the day you join class — your attendance of 30 days is marked at the school. The duration is kept flexible around your schedule so you can complete it comfortably.
Anytime — admission is kept flexible. The number of days are counted after you join the class. Your 30-day attendance will be counted at the school from the date you start. There is no fixed batch start date.
Students must be age 18 or above. Bring 1 photocopy each of: Voter Card, Blood Group certificate, Aadhaar Card, and one passport-size photo — to fill up the Admission Form. That's all you need to get started.
Timings are kept flexible. You need to give one hour anytime from Morning 5:00 AM to Evening 4:00 PM for driving sessions (beginners). Evening/night sessions (5 PM – 8 PM) are also available. Theory class is held every Saturday.

We give 7 km of on-road training every day. This covers real roads — not just parking lot manoeuvres — including city roads, local highways, and hill ghat sections depending on your progress level.
Pickup is made easier for students — you will be picked up and dropped from the nearest place wherever you stay. We cover Jaigaon, Hasimara, Hamiltonganj, and Kalchini. No need to travel to the school on your own.
Yes. Every Saturday we give a theory class to our students where we teach Vehicle Maintenance, Traffic Signals, and Road Symbols. Theory class runs 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This knowledge is also tested in the RTO Learner's Licence computer test.
Yes — every Sunday we are closed. Driving sessions and theory classes run Monday to Saturday. If a public holiday falls on a weekday, we inform students in advance about any change in schedule.
